On my next workout I have my 1st 1m handstand walk this time around on my training journey. It’s taken me through all the previous handstand holds, wall walks, negative handstand pushups and a couple of handstand pushups.
Here’s the thing. I can’t do a handset yet that isn’t against a wall. Last time round some years ago I became stuck at the same point. It’s not been covered so I’m making a jump to do something I’ve given a go and can’t seem to do - you’ve trained me to have the strength but I need to master that balance part first.
Can some more progression steps be added please? Some online resources suggest:
- Walk up the wall until in the chest-to-wall position, gently shift your weight through your hands until your toes become light enough to leave the wall.
Try to float both feet away for just 1–3 seconds, then return to the wall under control.
- controlled kick-ups
Once you’ve started finding balance without relying on the wall, practise kicking into a handstand with the wall behind you.
Your aim is to arrive with your heels just brushing the wall, or not touching it at all.
- freestanding handstand holds
