What does 2 x *n*kg dumbbells mean in a dumbbell session?

Hey everyone :wave:t2:

This is coming up a bit now so I just want to make this clear for us all. If you get assigned an exercise that requires 2 x nkg dumbbells, this should be done ideally with 2 dumbbells of the assigned weight.

For example, in the below exercise, one would use 2 x 10kg dumbbells.

Hope that’s clear!

Exactly. You would have one 10kg dumbell in each hand while doing the squat.

Wanted to reply on this topic. I think one of the problems with this is that it doesn’t take into account the weights you have available (I also saw this in another post). I run in the same situation. I entered a weight as a single and it gives me an exercise with that weight that requires a pair. Seems like a problem in the app if the first answer on this topic is correct.

Here is the excerises:

Unfortunately I can’t post another screenshot of my inserted weights since the forum doesn’t allow new users to post more than one file. But my highest pair I have inserted is 8KG

Hey @bvanbieze, a big welcome :wave:t2:

Yeah, so this isn’t a new thing-the app will always tell you if you need to use a pair of dumbbells.

One thing to say is that we always encourage you to adapt the exercise assigned in such a way that will allow you to complete it.

Firstly, let me explain part of the thinking, dumbbells can be very expensive and many users simply won’t buy lots of different pairs of dumbbells-and, to be honest, it also isn’t hugely necessary if you are able to adapt the exercise anyway. If we made it absolutely required to use a pair, the cost in itself would be hugely prohibitive for many, and you would be excluded from a huge range of exercises once your weight got past a certain point (in your case 2x8kg). We try to design our Training Journeys to be accessible for as many people as possible.

For example, Dumbbell Bench Presses…you would essentially be excluded from this great exercise if a pair of dumbbells was absolutely required. 8kg is much lighter than the weight you are being assigned.

Where this happens, all you have to do for the vast majority of exercises is use the single dumbbell assigned, complete the reps on one side, then switch over and complete the reps on the other side.

This isn’t the highest weight you have available though, you should simply use your 11kg dumbbell here.

Now…I grant that adapting the exercise in this case isn’t immediately straightforward (Dumbbell Squats), and for most Athletes probably means replacing the exercise with Goblet Squats, but it’s not the only way to do so, you can still complete this exercise with very good technique using a single dumbbell.
